Terror In The Corn Tucson, Arizona: 6.3 Stars out of 10

Location: 13591 W Avra Valley Rd, Marana, AZ 85653

Summary: Terror in the Corn, Tucson was what it claimed to be, Fear in a corn field. They had Four haunted houses (Rotting Gourd, Dead end Motel, Asylum, and Crawley Acres), a corn maze, 3 escape rooms, Zombie paintball (with interactive zombies that were more playful then scary), a very small food court, monsters in the midway, a DJ keeping things lively, a small pumpkin patch, a couple carnival games, and multiple photo opportunities located throughout the event. It was not the scariest night, but it was entertaining and we loved the Pennywise actor who walked around midway creating fear and terror.

Actors: (5.5 out of 10): Overall we didn’t think the actors were very inactive and when they did make contact, they were not scary or missed their mark entirely. Also, there were many long stretches of walking through corn with no props and no actors, we found ourselves asking, would it be better to have 1 less haunted house so Terror in the Corn could fill the corn?? There were a few scary experiences that stood out more than others. Most of the actors in the actual Asylum were creepy, they connected in a personal way making our skin crawl. The Burlap bag head monster in the Rotting Gourd haunted house was terrifying not only scaring us but the group behind us.

Immersion: (8 out of 10): The haunted houses were well done, created a cohesive experience in each of the haunted houses, with only a handful of rooms that felt out of place for the entire event. For example, the pirate scene in the fun house really had nothing to do with anything else in the rest of the haunted house, and there were parts of Crawley Acres that did not seem to connect to each other.

Props/Special Effects: (7 out of 10): There were some great effects made with well-placed lighting, creative props, scary little tricks, and even a couple things we had not seen before. We really enjoyed the pallet walkway with strobe lighting, the 1st and maybe even 2nd time, but by the 3rd and 4th times we were talking our way out of the haunted house because it felt lame and overdone. The crazy doll wall in the fun house, was something that will haunt our nightmares until the end of time, well done! The Alice in Wonderland was blood chilling and the spinning tunnel in the fun house was extremely well down. The way we entered through a light up doorway and dropped in was unnerving, but once again the use of a spinning tunnel in every haunted house made them feel almost boring and expected by the end of the night.

Customer Service: (5 out of 10) Barbra who worked in the pumpkin patch and the people who worked at the paint ball were super nice, willing to take photos and answered any questions we had. Multiple times when approaching the haunted houses, staff seemed to be unclear about the rules and instead asked us to tell them the rules or said, “you have been here you know what to do right”. We also heard an actor in a haunted house insult a victim walking through, which caused negativity. There is a difference between being “scary” and being “rude”, that kind of behavior is inappropriate and unnecessary.

Scare Factor: (5.5 out of 10): Overall these haunted houses just did not seem “haunted” most of the corn we were just walking through on our own waiting for something to happen. Though there were a couple creepy parts no part was “scary”. The most noteworthy scare was in the monster midway. Pennywise was scary and did a great job interacting with victims as they waited and walked through the night from one activity to the next.

Entertainment and Value (7 out of 10): We would have rather paid for two really scary and fully developed haunted houses than four haunted houses that seemed partially finished. We always hoped the actors would be consistently interactive and trained to be appropriate in how they scare, and this is not what we saw when at Terror in the Corn Tucson. Though the price was quite low the scary/fear experience we anticipated was not what we hoped it would be. For a haunted house that has been around for many years we were disappointed.
