Fear Complex: 7 Stars out of 10

Location: 2220 E Bijou St, Colorado Springs, CO 80909
Summary: Fear Complex has done a lot of work over the last few years creating a full midway with so much for us to do on a busy night! Whether we prefer to sit and watch a movie, play darts, or have our palm read there is something fun for all to do. They have even made some carnival food available, if you can stomach to eat on a night filled with blood and horror! Be aware that as you take your first or even last bite the warden might zap you with his light and laugh as he walks by. What an awesome way to wait in a virtual queue line. As we approached the deadly walk into hell, I mean the mines, we saw a bone chilling well and dark figures behind gates awaiting us. We knew we were in for a frightful time in the complex!
Actors: (6 out of 10): Overall the actors who were in the haunted house had great makeup and makeup is really important for creating a scare. In the last two years they have moved two using an airbrush technique in both these haunted houses, and the creepy look created was incredibly deadly! The witch doctor created a personal connection and was terrifying in how they interacted with us, followed and made scary sounds even into the next room. What was most disappointing for us was how many rooms had no actors and how a couple rooms had staff in T-shirts obviously walking through them, this was distracting and took away from the scare.
Immersion: (5.5 out of 10): The mines flowed together seamlessly and created a terrifying experience. That said, the rest of the haunted house felt segmented and pieced apart. One room did not lead into the next, though each scene was enjoyable we did not understand how they connected, making it difficult to feel immersed in fear.
Props/Special Effects: (6 out of 10): There were some good effects made with well-placed lighting and few creative props. A few props stood out above the rest such as a huge spider that will crawl through our thoughts until the end of time, two snakes that popped out to slither into our veins, and the walk between a minotaur’s legs to face our fate in the elevator was so trippy as hell. They also used heat to make us feel as if we were in hell, which increased some sense of panic throughout our time in the haunted house. The simple use of skeletons rocking a baby demon in a rocking chair was chilling and noted multiple times throughout our visit in the haunted house.
Customer Service: (10 out of 10) This haunted house went over the top with customer service, being friendly, at all times. The creative director, owner and all staff/actors were incredibly welcoming and awesome at their jobs. They understood the rules of the haunted house and did a great job staying in character, which was a huge part of this particular haunted house. The creative director also took time out of his busy evening to speak with us and “chase” us through the haunted house because I lost a bet with him. This made the experience more interactive and entertaining.
Scare Factor: (6 out of 10): Overall the mines was the scary part of this haunted house, from when we got off the elevator until the end where we faced our fears with a Witch Doctor, creepy crawlers on the ground, and more jump scares then other parts of the haunted house. The fun house portion was also disorienting and creepy with well-created art and scary imagery that was overwhelming. There were many parts of the haunted house where there were no actors in rooms, so we were looking around at props, though this might be interesting it was not scary. We were startled by the warden a few more times than we might have been had we not lost the bet outside the haunted house, which increased the jump startles a bit.
Entertainment and Value (8.5 out of 10): When you purchase tickets together you get tickets for Fear Complex and Hellscream. If you want the VIP tickets it is only $66, this gives you access to both haunted houses with a shorter line, and you can enjoy the midway at fear complex. The technical director explained they put about five months into the midway and it was obvious; it is really cool and there is a ton that was not there before, defiantly worth checking out!
As Always, Come Haunt with us!
